The central living area of the luxury condo Le St-Regis

Sophistication is an understatement for this luxury condo. Featured on page 163 of the second issue of 2009 of the Christie’s Great Estates magazine, Le St-Regis is truly a gem.

Built in 1895, this 3,600 square feet condominium sits in the heart of Old Montreal and is actually classified as a historical monument. This spacious condo with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms was completely restored to its original luster in 2005. Don’t believe for a minute though that privacy will be an issue with this condo because in this building apartments occupy an entire floor!

The things I love the most about Le St-Regis are the vast use of wood and those massive columns that segment the central living area. The wood brings a real classy feeling to the entire place and the tall columns add a bit of expected elegance. I say unexpected because it’s not really something I would have expected to see in a residence but they turned out to be very attractive – especially how they taper off to the top with the gold molding.

The excellent use of light must also be mentioned, most notably in the master bedroom. The spotlights set in the roof all around the perimeter of the room really create a dramatic effect. This dramatic effect is seen throughout the entire condo, for instance in the kitchen where the lights just set off the exquisite onyx countertops (makes you not even want to eat at the kitchen counter!).

High ceilings always make a space look so expansive and the 12 foot ceilings of Le St-Regis surely do accomplish this – the place appears to be pretty spacious. The thick draperies that flow down from the high ceiling look very plush and wealthy. Some of these are also used in a very inventive way between the massive columns to segment the living area.

So many modern and antique elements just come together to make this condo sophisticated beyond any measure. From the piano, to the classic wood moldings, to the roof designs, to the wall coverings, to the billiards table, to the state-of-the-art home theater etc, etc this place just shouts CLASS!

Since it’s a historical monument, if I’m ever in good ole Montreal it shouldn’t be any problem taking a tour. I’d love to see this place in real life!! Last known price for Le St-Regis was about $4 million US – so it might be just a little bit out of reach for the average consumer ;) .
